EP validation in Georgia is now available

12 / 1 / 2024

The Agreement between the European Patent Organisation and the Government of Georgia on Validation of European Patents has come into effect. Starting from January 15, 2024, European patent applications and patents granted by the European Patent Office (EPO) can be validated in Georgia according to the national law.

This Validation Agreement ensures that the legal effect and conditions for European patent applications and patents validated in Georgia will be equivalent to those of national patent application and patents.

It is expected to contribute to the development of Georgia’s national patent system, promote innovations, and attract foreign investments.

Under this agreement, inventors and business can obtain high-level protection for their inventions in Georgia by submitting a single European patent application, without the need to file a separate national application.

Georgia will be the 5th country to have the validation status, allowing patent protection based on a single European patent application in a total of 45 countries.

From January 15, 2024, applicants can request validation for Georgia for any European patent or international (PCT) application filed on or after the date.
